Typically, prediction market odds offer a distinct perspective compared to traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, which represents their profit margin. This market, driven by the wisdom of the crowd on Polymarket, aims to reflect the true probabilities as perceived by traders. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, this market dynamically adjusts as more information and opinions are factored in by participants. Examining the difference can reveal where the crowd disagrees with conventional wisdom.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price fluctuates, providing a dynamic assessment of the event's potential results. The market’s efficiency relies on informed traders and active participation, leading to a potentially more accurate prediction than static odds.
