Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set their lines based on internal models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. If a significant number of informed bettors disagree with the sportsbook, the prediction market odds may move in a different direction. It’s common to see discrepancies, particularly before a lot of money has been traded on Polymarket. Comparing the two can offer insights into public versus informed opinion.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where participants buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more shares are traded, the price adjusts to reflect the collective sentiment of the traders. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is driven by supply and demand; if many traders believe a particular player will win, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing creates a real-time assessment of the match's potential results.
