Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the views of many individual traders. If a significant number of informed bettors believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, we may see the prediction market odds diverge. It's common to find discrepancies, especially before a lot of money has been wagered on either side. Analyzing these differences can be a valuable exercise for those seeking an edge.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each outcome. As more shares are traded, the price adjusts to reflect the collective sentiment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of the outcome it represents. For example, a share trading at 60 means there's a 60% implied probability of that outcome occurring, according to the traders on Polymarket.
