Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probability of an event occurring, as determined by traders. It’s common to see prediction market odds more closely aligned with the wisdom of the crowd and potentially more accurate, especially as the event approaches. However, discrepancies can arise due to differing information or risk assessments, so comparing them can be insightful.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust accordingly, creating a dynamic and responsive market. The current implied probability of a specific outcome is determined by the share price relative to $1, with higher prices indicating greater confidence.
