Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance action, while this market allows traders to continuously adjust probabilities based on new information and their own analysis. If there's a significant discrepancy, it may indicate that the crowd believes a sportsbook has mispriced the event. Examining these differences can provide valuable insights into where potential value lies, though it’s important to remember that both represent probabilities of the same underlying outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price converges towards what the market collectively believes is the true probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price indicates what percentage of the total market capitalization is allocated to a specific outcome, and changes based on supply and demand for those shares. This dynamic pricing allows for real-time adjustments based on new information.
