Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook odds which are set by professional oddsmakers. Sportsbooks may incorporate factors like public perception and marketing strategies into their lines, while this market relies on traders directly expressing their beliefs about the outcome. Over time, prediction market prices tend to become more accurate as more information becomes available and more traders participate. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before the event begins, as the market processes new information and adjusts its probabilities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand from traders on Polymarket, and isn't influenced by external factors or predetermined values. This dynamic pricing allows for a real-time assessment of expectations.
