Prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, potentially differing from sportsbook odds which may be influenced by factors like house bias or initial public perception. Sportsbooks typically set initial lines to balance betting action, while this market allows participants to freely express their beliefs. If there is a significant discrepancy between the two, it could indicate that the market believes the sportsbook has mispriced the event, or that new information hasn't fully been incorporated into the sportsbook's odds. It's common to see convergence as the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market dynamically adjusts based on supply and demand; increased buying pressure raises the price, indicating growing confidence in that outcome, while selling pressure lowers it. This creates a fluid and responsive price discovery process.
