Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market relies on individuals freely trading based on their own analysis. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant information emerges or as public perception shifts. Comparing the implied probabilities from both can be a useful exercise for informed decision-making, though they represent distinct approaches to forecasting the outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of each share reflects the market's current assessment of the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust accordingly. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is driven entirely by supply and demand; traders who believe an outcome is more likely will bid up its price, while those who believe it's less likely will offer shares for sale at a lower price.
