Prediction market odds often differ from those offered by traditional sportsbooks due to the wisdom of the crowd effect. Sportsbooks set their odds based on models and expert analysis, while this market reflects the collective predictions of many individuals. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing an outcome, they can express that view by trading on Polymarket, potentially driving the odds in a different direction. This can lead to prediction market odds being more accurate, or at least representing a broader range of opinions, than those found at sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a real-time probability assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a particular player will win, the higher the price of shares representing that outcome will rise, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing reflects the aggregated insights of all participants in the market.
