Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often incorporating information and analysis not immediately available to traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set initial lines based on team statistics and expert opinions, this market allows traders to adjust probabilities as new information emerges, potentially leading to odds that differ from those found at sportsbooks. It's common to see prediction markets outperform traditional odds in their accuracy, especially as the event approaches, as the collective intelligence of the market refines its assessment of the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the match's result. The current price indicates what the market believes is the fair probability of a particular result, and traders can profit if their assessment differs from the market's consensus.
