Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market relies on the wisdom of the crowd. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when public opinion diverges from expert analysis. It's common to see this market offer odds that are more aligned with statistical probabilities or insider information, though sportsbook odds still provide a valuable benchmark for comparison. Examining both can give a more complete picture of the potential outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a player will win, the higher the price of shares representing that player’s victory will climb. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective intelligence of the crowd and adjusts in real-time as new information becomes available.
