Generally, prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a more accurate forecast than traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks may incorporate biases or adjust lines to encourage balanced betting, while this market allows traders to freely express their beliefs. However, sportsbook odds are readily available and can serve as a useful benchmark for comparison. Discrepancies between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds can present opportunities for informed traders, suggesting where the market may be under- or overestimating a particular outcome. It's important to consider both sources of information when evaluating the potential results.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the collective intelligence of the traders. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts dynamically, providing a real-time assessment of the event’s likelihood. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand for shares, creating a decentralized and transparent pricing process.
