Generally, prediction market odds often reflect information and insights beyond those considered by traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert opinions, this market incorporates the wisdom of the crowd, allowing for a dynamic assessment of probabilities as new information emerges. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions on player form, potential injuries, or even subtle strategic advantages. Comparing the two can reveal where the market believes there's an edge or where sportsbooks may be mispricing the event.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. The market is driven by supply and demand; if many traders believe a particular outcome is likely, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa.
