Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. It's common to see discrepancies emerge, especially when there's significant public interest or disagreement about the likely outcome. Examining these differences can be valuable for informed decision-making, though it’s important to remember that both sources have inherent limitations and potential biases.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price reflects the aggregated sentiment of all participants, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event's likelihood. This allows for a fluid and responsive pricing system based on collective intelligence.
