Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on their own analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides. This market, however, allows anyone to trade and express their beliefs, leading to odds that can diverge from sportsbook lines as new information emerges or public opinion shifts. It's common to see prediction markets incorporate information more quickly than traditional betting venues, especially regarding nuanced factors impacting the event.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders believe an outcome is likely, the higher the share price will climb, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of those trading it, offering a real-time assessment of the event's potential results.
