Prediction market odds often reflect a different kind of wisdom than sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market represents the collective belief of informed traders. Generally, prediction markets tend to be more accurate than traditional betting markets, particularly when a significant amount of volume is traded. However, sportsbook odds can still provide a useful benchmark for comparison, especially early in the market's lifecycle, and can highlight potential discrepancies in perceived probabilities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the aggregated sentiment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and doesn’t incorporate external factors beyond the information available to traders.
