Prediction market odds, such as those found on this market, often differ from traditional sportsbook odds due to the underlying mechanisms. Sportsbooks set odds to ensure profitability, incorporating a margin, while prediction markets are driven by supply and demand. This means that the odds on Polymarket and Kalshi reflect what traders are *willing* to pay for a given outcome, potentially revealing more accurate probabilities. Furthermore, prediction markets benefit from continuous updating as new information emerges, unlike sportsbook odds which are typically adjusted less frequently. This can lead to discrepancies, with this market sometimes offering more favorable odds than sportsbooks.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. The differing prices on Polymarket and Kalshi for the Virtus Bologna vs. Besiktas game are common in aggregated markets. Each platform has its own user base, trading limits, and fee structure, which can influence price discovery. For example, Polymarket might attract more sophisticated traders with access to specialized information, while Kalshi could have a broader, more casual user base. Additionally, the volume traded on each platform plays a role; higher volume generally leads to tighter spreads and more efficient pricing. These factors contribute to the observed differences in probabilities for the outcome of this market.
