Prediction market odds often reflect a different kind of wisdom than sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market aggregates the beliefs of a diverse group of forecasters. If a significant discrepancy emerges between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds, it could indicate that the crowd believes the sportsbook is mispricing the event. However, it's important to remember that both represent probabilities, and neither is guaranteed to be accurate. Analyzing the difference can offer valuable insights into public perception and potential value.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is entirely driven by supply and demand, meaning it's a direct measure of what traders are willing to pay for exposure to a specific result. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
