Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market aggregates the wisdom of the crowd. If a significant number of people believe a particular outcome is more likely, the odds will shift accordingly. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, biases, or simply a different assessment of probabilities. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster than sportsbooks in response to new information, potentially offering an edge to informed traders.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, creating a dynamic and responsive pricing system. This allows for a real-time assessment of probabilities as new information becomes available.
