Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance action, while this market allows traders to express their own independent assessments of the likely outcome. If there's a significant discrepancy, arbitrage opportunities may arise, as traders attempt to profit from the difference. It's common to see prediction markets move more quickly to incorporate new information, potentially offering a more accurate reflection of the true probabilities than static sportsbook lines.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined entirely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, and reflects the collective intelligence of those participating in the market.
