Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market aggregates the beliefs of informed traders. If a significant discrepancy emerges between the two, arbitrage opportunities may arise. However, it's important to remember that both represent probabilities as perceived by different groups, and neither guarantees the actual outcome. Keep in mind that sportsbook odds can shift based on news and betting patterns, just like this market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for one outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price reflects the collective assessment of all participants, creating a dynamic and real-time forecast. The current price indicates the market's expectation of the event’s result, and changes based on new information and trading activity.
