Comparing prediction market odds to sportsbook odds can reveal interesting insights into public sentiment and expert analysis. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market reflects the collective wisdom of individuals trading shares. Often, prediction markets are more accurate than traditional polls or initial sportsbook lines, as they incentivize participants to research and express their true beliefs. Discrepancies between the two can highlight potential value opportunities for informed traders.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price reflects the aggregated sentiment of all participants, creating a dynamic and efficient forecast. This differs from fixed-odds betting, as the odds adjust in real-time based on trading activity.
