Typically, prediction market odds offer a distinct perspective compared to traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, representing their profit margin, and may be influenced by promotional considerations. This market, driven by the wisdom of the crowd on Polymarket, aims to reflect the true probability of outcomes as assessed by informed traders. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, prediction markets dynamically adjust based on real-money wagers, potentially revealing discrepancies in perceived value.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of shares directly corresponds to the estimated chance of that outcome occurring, providing a real-time assessment of market sentiment.
