Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance their risk, while this market allows traders to freely express their beliefs about the outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by betting on both the prediction market and a sportsbook. However, it's important to remember that both have their own sources of information and biases, and neither is guaranteed to be perfectly accurate.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, making it a dynamic representation of collective opinion.
