Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on models and internal risk assessments, while this market is driven by individuals freely trading based on their own analysis. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. These differences can arise from varying levels of information access, biases, or simply differing interpretations of the same data. Examining both can provide a more comprehensive view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different exact scores. The price of each share reflects the market’s implied probability of that score occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s efficiency is driven by the incentive for traders to accurately assess the likelihood of each outcome, as profitable trades depend on correct predictions. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date information available.
