Currently, prediction market odds often reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, representing their profit margin, and may be influenced by public betting patterns. This market, however, is driven by individuals directly predicting the outcome and expressing their beliefs through trades. Therefore, discrepancies can arise based on differing information, analytical approaches, or simply a contrarian view to popular opinion. It’s common to see prediction markets offer more nuanced probabilities than standard sportsbook offerings.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where participants buy and sell shares representing their belief in each possible outcome. The price of each share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the traders. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a particular team will score first, the higher the price of shares representing that outcome will rise. This creates a dynamic pricing system that adjusts in real-time based on market sentiment and new information, offering a unique view compared to static odds.
