Often, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. This market, like others, can reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially incorporating information not fully captured by sportsbook algorithms. Sportsbooks set odds based on their own models and risk assessment, while this market is driven by individual predictions and the willingness to take on risk. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions, access to information, or simply variations in how probabilities are assessed. It's a useful exercise to compare the two to see where the consensus lies.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in an outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. Conversely, selling pressure drives the price down. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds continually adjust to reflect the latest information and collective predictions of the traders participating in the market.
