Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can often differ from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on models and a desire to balance action on both sides, while this market is driven purely by traders expressing their beliefs. If a significant discrepancy exists between the two, opportunities for arbitrage may arise. However, it's important to remember that prediction markets incentivize accurate forecasting, potentially leading to more efficient pricing than traditional betting venues, though this is not always the case.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing different exact scores, and the price of each share reflects the implied probability of that score occurring. As more shares are traded, the price adjusts to reflect the collective belief of the participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price movements are influenced by news, team form, injuries, and any other information traders deem relevant to the outcome of the match, creating a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
