Prediction market odds, like those found on Polymarket and Kalshi, often differ from traditional sportsbook odds due to the underlying mechanisms. Sportsbooks set odds based on their own models and aim to balance risk and profit, while prediction markets reflect the collective intelligence of many traders. This market’s probabilities are derived from actual money at risk, incentivizing participants to express their honest beliefs. While sportsbooks may incorporate subjective factors, prediction markets tend to be more objective, though both can be influenced by public perception and information flow. Discrepancies can present opportunities for arbitrage.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Prices on Polymarket and Kalshi for this market may diverge due to several factors. Each platform attracts a different user base with varying levels of expertise and information. Trading volume can also vary significantly between the two, impacting price discovery. Furthermore, the specific rules and interfaces of each platform can influence how traders interpret information and express their predictions. Different liquidity levels and market maker activity also contribute to price discrepancies. These differences highlight the benefits of aggregating data across multiple platforms to gain a more comprehensive view.
