Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may be influenced by factors like public betting patterns or the sportsbook’s own risk management. This market, on the other hand, allows individuals to express their beliefs directly, potentially leading to odds that more accurately forecast the outcome. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges, as traders incorporate diverse perspectives.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price of shares will fluctuate, reflecting the evolving consensus. The current price reflects the collective assessment of all traders on Polymarket regarding which team is more likely to score first in the match.
