Prediction market odds often differ from those found at traditional sportsbooks, reflecting the wisdom of the crowd versus the assessments of professional oddsmakers. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially when public opinion strongly deviates from expert analysis. Examining these differences can reveal valuable insights into the perceived value of various outcomes and the collective intelligence of market participants.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. As more people buy shares in a particular player, the price increases, indicating a higher perceived chance of success. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities accordingly, providing a real-time assessment of the event’s potential outcomes.
