Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the outcome, leading to odds that can be more efficient or incorporate information not yet fully reflected in sportsbook lines. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access, analytical approaches, or simply the dynamics of each market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price indicates the collective assessment of the likelihood of a particular result in the French volleyball match. Higher demand for shares in a specific outcome will drive its price up, signaling increased confidence in that result.
