Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own analysis and to balance action, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, the odds on Polymarket will adjust accordingly, potentially offering a more accurate prediction of the event’s probability. However, sportsbook odds can still be a useful data point when evaluating this market, offering a contrasting perspective.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who buy shares in a specific outcome, the higher the price will rise, indicating increased confidence in that result. Conversely, increased selling pressure will lower the price. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
