Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring profit, while Polymarket allows traders to directly assess probabilities. This can lead to discrepancies, with this market sometimes showing higher or lower implied probabilities for a given outcome compared to sportsbook lines. It's common to see prediction markets aggregate information from a wider range of sources, potentially identifying value that sportsbooks miss, or reacting more quickly to new information.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting a higher perceived likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined entirely by supply and demand; there is no central bookmaker setting the odds. This dynamic pricing allows for real-time adjustments based on collective intelligence.
