Often, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds to maximize profit, incorporating a margin for themselves, while this market reflects the collective wisdom of traders. If a significant difference emerges between the two, it could indicate that prediction market participants believe the sportsbook’s odds are miscalibrated, or that they have access to information not yet fully priced in by sportsbooks. It's important to remember that both represent probabilities, but are derived through different mechanisms and potentially different information sets.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes of the Rays-Guardians game. The price of each share reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the prices will fluctuate, providing a real-time assessment of the game’s expected result. The market’s efficiency relies on informed traders and active participation, creating a dynamic pricing environment.
