Frequently asked questions

It’s common to see differences between prediction market odds and those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance action on both sides, while prediction markets reflect the collective wisdom of traders. If a large number of people believe one player will win, the odds on Polymarket will shift accordingly, potentially diverging from sportsbook lines. These discrepancies can create opportunities for arbitrage, where traders can profit by exploiting the differences in pricing between the two types of markets. Examining these differences can provide insights into public perception.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event’s likelihood. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket.
