Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance action, while this market is driven purely by individuals wagering their own capital. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the varying levels of liquidity. It’s common to see this market and sportsbook odds converge as the event approaches, but significant differences can present opportunities for arbitrage or informed betting.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event’s likelihood, driven by the actions of traders responding to new information and their own analysis.
