Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action, while this market allows traders to express their own probabilities. If a significant number of people believe a sportsbook has mispriced a player’s chances, the odds on Polymarket will adjust accordingly. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform traditional sportsbooks over time, especially when there’s strong disagreement between the two. However, sportsbook odds can still offer a useful point of comparison for assessing value in this market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of a particular player winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price converges towards what the market collectively believes is the true probability. The current price indicates the market's assessment of each player's chances, and changes in volume and trading activity can signal shifts in sentiment.
