Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on expert analysis and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to express their own beliefs, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply variations in opinion. It’s common to see this market adjust rapidly as new information emerges, whereas sportsbook odds may be slower to react. Comparing these odds can provide a valuable perspective on public perception.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of each share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price reflects the collective intelligence of all participants, and the platform facilitates this price discovery process. Trading volume and open interest are key indicators of market activity and confidence.
