Frequently, prediction market odds diverge from those offered by traditional sportsbooks, reflecting differing information and incentives. Sportsbooks often set odds to maximize profit, incorporating a margin for themselves, while this market represents the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the outcome. If a significant difference emerges, it could indicate that prediction market participants have access to information not yet fully priced into sportsbook lines, or simply have a different assessment of the players’ chances. It’s a useful comparison point for anyone following the Suzhou tennis match.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a probability estimate. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares of a specific outcome, the price increases, indicating a growing belief in that outcome's probability. Conversely, increased selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic pricing reflects the aggregated predictions of all participants in this market.
