Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from traditional sportsbook odds due to varying information sources and incentives. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own analysis and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. If sportsbooks heavily favor one competitor, this market might show a more nuanced view if traders believe the other competitor has a higher chance of winning. Discrepancies can arise from differing levels of expertise among participants and the potential for information advantages within the prediction market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the market price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event's potential results. The more shares purchased for a particular outcome, the higher its price rises, indicating increased confidence in that outcome's probability. This dynamic pricing ensures the market remains responsive to new information and evolving sentiment.
