Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant discrepancy exists, it may indicate that the crowd perceives information differently than the sportsbook, or that one venue has access to unique insights. It's important to note that prediction markets allow for continuous trading, meaning odds can shift dramatically as new information emerges, unlike the fixed odds offered by many sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived chance of success. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the collective intelligence of the traders on Polymarket, and changes based on supply and demand for each share. This dynamic pricing ensures the market stays responsive to new information.
