Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on statistical analysis and expert opinions, while this market aggregates the views of many individual traders. This can lead to discrepancies, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts. It’s common to see prediction markets react more quickly to unforeseen events or changes in perceived probability than traditional sportsbooks, offering a potentially more dynamic assessment of the likely result.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is entirely driven by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on their own analysis and information. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
