It's common to see differences between prediction market odds and those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often set their odds to maximize profit, incorporating a margin for themselves, while this market reflects the collective wisdom of traders. If a significant discrepancy exists, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by betting on both the prediction market and a sportsbook. However, it’s important to consider factors like transaction fees and potential limitations on bet sizes when evaluating such opportunities. Ultimately, comparing these odds can provide a broader perspective on the perceived probabilities of different outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome of the Skhabitskiy vs. Stetsenko match. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. Conversely, increased selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective intelligence of all participants.
