It's common to see differences between prediction market odds and those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often set odds to reflect public perception and manage their risk, incorporating a 'vig' or commission into the lines. This market, however, is driven by the collective intelligence of traders who are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. Therefore, prediction market prices can sometimes be more efficient, particularly as the event approaches and more information becomes available. Discrepancies may also arise due to differing opinions on the likelihood of various scenarios.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts accordingly. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price can fluctuate rapidly based on new information or shifts in sentiment.
