Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd assessment, often differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks incorporate a profit margin into their odds, while this market aims to represent the true probability of an event occurring as perceived by traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, biases, or levels of market efficiency. If sportsbook odds significantly diverge from the probabilities implied by this market, it may present an arbitrage opportunity for informed traders.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price fluctuates based on supply and demand, driven by new information and changing sentiment among traders. Higher demand for shares in a particular outcome will drive up its price, indicating a greater perceived likelihood of that outcome.
