Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their view. It's common to see discrepancies, especially when public perception deviates from expert analysis. These differences can arise from varying levels of information, biases, or simply differing interpretations of the available data. Examining these differences can be insightful when evaluating the potential value in either market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's likelihood. The total volume traded provides insight into the market’s confidence in each potential result.
