Comparing prediction market odds to sportsbook odds reveals how public sentiment differs from professional oddsmakers. Often, prediction markets can incorporate a wider range of information and perspectives than traditional sportsbooks, potentially leading to different probabilities for the same outcome. If sportsbook odds strongly disagree with this market, it could indicate a perceived informational edge or a difference in risk assessment between the two. It’s important to remember that both represent probabilities, but are derived through different mechanisms and participant bases.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. Conversely, selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly adapt to new information and reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd.
