Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different kind of wisdom than those found at sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while this market allows traders to directly assess probabilities. It’s common to find that prediction markets are more accurate forecasters of event outcomes, as they aggregate the knowledge of many individuals. However, sportsbook odds can still provide a useful benchmark for comparison, and discrepancies between the two may indicate areas where the market perceives an advantage or undervaluation. This comparison can be insightful for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand for shares, with no external factors influencing the valuation. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market remains responsive to changing conditions.
