Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the opinions of individuals willing to put their capital at risk. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially early in the market's life cycle, as prediction markets can be more responsive to new information and shifts in sentiment. Comparing the two can be a useful exercise for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, ultimately reflecting the market's consensus probability of each outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price indicates what traders are collectively willing to pay for a share that pays out if their predicted outcome occurs. Higher prices suggest a greater perceived probability of that outcome, while lower prices indicate less confidence.
